Before sleep tonight, a few more design tweaks and a brain-burning personal brainstorm (VivaJava Dice). Fishing for guidance, I was explaining to Darrell how the different abilities worked together, and he asked, “Why are you adding so much? It’s a dice game.” The inference being that I was adding complexity to a game that shouldn’t ever last even 60 minutes. Very true.
But, I explained, I look at the design as a “system;” as an opportunity to grab people with the basics first and then let them see how deep the rabbit hole actually is for themselves. And damn this system is killing me because I can’t find that PERFECT beginner set-up.
So, we continue to prepare for Unpub 3, and Darrell’s game, Compounded peeks at me from behind my laptop. I’m excited that in two days it will be up on Kickstarter. I have my digital funds ready.
I see another game design nurtured for years alongside mine and I know that all the brainstorming and melodrama over trivial design details is worth it. Darrell does it. I do it.
